Manchester United laying off around 250 employees

(Patria) - English football giant Manchester United plans to lay off around 250 of its employees as part of a far-reaching cost-cutting program.

Jobs are expected to be lost across all departments and at all levels of the club, except for the Manchester United Foundation charity.

Such a large number of redundancies would mean a 22 percent reduction in the workforce.

The Red Devils finished eighth in the Premiership last season.

That is the worst finish for the 20-time English champions since the establishment of the Premier League in the early 1990s.

However, they ended a disappointing season by winning the FA Cup, beating local rivals Manchester City 2-1 in the final at Wembley.

Also, this significant cost-cutting comes just one month after British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe bought a 25 percent stake in the club.

According to data from last June, United had 1,112 employees.
