Hungary sends another 33 police officers to the border of Serbia and North Macedonia

(Patria) - Hungary has sent another 33 police officers to the border of Serbia and North Macedonia, as part of the fight against illegal migration, it was announced on the Hungarian police website.

These members of the Hungarian police will, over the next month, together with their Serbian colleagues, perform duties on a 113-kilometer section of the border between Serbia and North Macedonia, on the main route of illegal migration on the Balkan route.

The primary task of the Hungarian police officers, as stated, is to prevent and detect illegal border crossings, human smugglers, and illegal migrants.

At the send-off of the new contingent of police officers, the Deputy Minister of Interior of Hungary, Bence Rétvári, said that their work is proof that borders can indeed be protected from illegal migration with decisive action, appropriate tools, and legal regulations.

Rétvári added that Hungary has so far spent around two billion euros on protecting its borders, which are the external border of the European Union.

He warned that recent events show how necessary it is to prepare for another wave of migration from Lebanon, Tunisia, and Nigeria, including the Balkan route, on the southern borders of Hungary or Serbia.

He recalled that since last year, Hungarian and Austrian police officers have been assisting the Serbian authorities on the border between Serbia and North Macedonia.

- This is proof that it is possible to act effectively against illegal migration through international cooperation - added Rétvári.
