Lyon will remain in the elite tier of French football after all

(Patria) - French football giant Lyon officially remains a member of Ligue 1 after months of uncertainty and administrative drama surrounding the club's financial stability.

It was confirmed today that Lyon will play in the elite tier of French football next season, but the French financial supervisory body (DNCG) has decided to limit the club's salaries and transfers.

As a reminder, in mid-June, the DNCG made a provisional decision to relegate Lyon to Ligue 2 for failing to meet strict financial criteria.

The club was facing huge debts and an unconvincing recovery plan, which caused shock in the French public and among the fans of one of the most successful clubs in the country.

Immediately after the relegation announcement, Lyon exercised its right to appeal and initiated intensive negotiations with the DNCG and potential investors.

Club owner John Textor and his Eagle Football Group sold stakes in English Crystal Palace and Lyon's women's section, and additional capital was injected to meet the regulator's requirements.

Despite the provisional relegation decision, Lyon was included in the draw and calendar for Ligue 1 for the new season, which was the first sign that the appeal might be successful.

In parallel with the fight for league survival, the club also signed an agreement with UEFA, securing its participation in the Europa League, but only on the condition that it remains in the top league.

After a further review of the financial documentation and new investments, the DNCG officially withdrew the decision to relegate Lyon today.

The club has proven its financial sustainability and met all conditions for competing in Ligue 1, confirming its continued presence in the elite of French football.

Olympique Lyonnais was founded in 1950 and over the decades has grown into one of the most famous French football clubs.

Its greatest success came in the early 2000s, when it won the French championship title seven times in a row (from 2002 to 2008).

The club is known for developing young players and its strong academy, which has produced numerous top footballers. In the 2023/2024 season, Lyon finished in 6th place in Ligue 1.
