Lando Norris is the new Formula 1 World Champion

(Patria) - Briton Lando Norris in McLaren is the new Formula 1 World Champion.

Norris finished third today in the last, 24th race of the season, held in Abu Dhabi, which was enough for him to take the lead in the overall standings.

The victory at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi went to Dutchman Max Verstappen in a Red Bull, but it was not enough for him to celebrate the overall title.

Second place went to Australian Oscar Piastri in a McLaren, who also had hopes for the title, and the third place, enough for the title, was secured by the aforementioned Norris.

Before the final race of the season, Norris was in the best position, leading with 408 points, and his first career title was secured by finishing in one of the top three positions, regardless of his rivals' results.

The reigning world champion Verstappen was second with 396 points, while Piastri was third with 392 points. As a reminder, a win brings 25 points, second place 18, third 15, fourth 12...

In the end, Norris won the world title with two points more than Verstappen. The last time a McLaren driver won the world title was in 2008 when Briton Lewis Hamilton was victorious.
