(Patria) - Blood type is not only important for transfusions - doctors say it can also affect the probability of developing certain diseases, reports Index.hr.
Research has shown that one blood type has the lowest probability of developing some types of cancer, while other groups carry a slightly higher risk.
According to a 2021 study, people with blood type O have the lowest risk of developing several types of cancer, including colorectal and pancreatic cancer.
At the same time, people with blood types A, B, and AB have a higher risk of developing some malignant diseases, including pancreatic and stomach cancer.
Although it is not yet precisely known why this is the case, doctors believe the reason is related to certain proteins in the blood, which can affect the development of diseases or blood clots.
However, researchers point out that there is no clear evidence that blood type can affect the severity of the disease or mortality from cancer.
Doctor Sanjay Aggarwal emphasizes how important it is to know your blood type, because besides being important in emergency situations, it can be useful to know what predispositions we have for certain diseases.
Although we cannot change our blood type, the information can help in preventive check-ups or lifestyle changes to reduce other risk factors.
