(Patria) - A hat-trick from Lionel Messi led Inter Miami to the American MLS league record for points in a single season after a 6-2 victory over New England Revolution in Fort Lauderdale, writes Sportklub.
Despite entering the match only in the 58th minute, Messi immediately assisted Benjamin Cremaschi's goal, and then scored three goals for Miami's convincing victory, which was trailing 0-2 until the 40th minute.
Luis Suarez scored two goals and had two assists, with both goals coming within four minutes of each other in the first half.
Both Messi and Suarez finished their first full MLS seasons with 20 goals each. Messi also had 16 assists in 19 regular season matches, while Suarez recorded nine assists in 27 matches.
Miami thus broke the old record of 73 points, set by the Revolution team in 2021, with 74 points, and the Florida club also won the Supporters' Shield for the regular season champion.
In the playoffs, Miami awaits the winner of the duel between Montreal and Atlanta United.
