Have you heard of the national monument Smrike: Twelve stone dragons with wide-open eyes keep watch over Novi Travnik

(Patria) - A hunter of beautiful shots, photographer Boris Trogrančić, was led this time by curiosity to a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina near Novi Travnik.

Smrike, a monument also known as the Stone Dragons, presents an incredible sight that amazes, astonishes, inspires awe, but also sadness.

Twelve stone sculptures represent the same number of guardians who, with wide-open eyes, protect the innocent people of that region.

"On my photographic journey, I often bypass the area of central Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is actually full of beautiful scenes of natural beauty and cultural heritage.

It surprises me that very few people know about this place - in fact, everyone I've talked to had never heard of this unique monument - Trogrančić tells Punkufer about the monument built in 1975 according to the design of architect Bogdan Bogdanović, which serves as a memorial to the victims of fascism from World War II.

He explains that the unusual monument consists of 12 sculptures, each two meters high, and is located not far from Novi Travnik, on a spacious, somewhat isolated plateau.

- The necropolis to the victims of fascism in Novi Travnik is one of the many monuments that Bogdanović designed in the former Yugoslavia. The better-known among them are the Jasenovac Flower and the Partisan Cemetery in Mostar - Trogrančić points out.
