Google to satisfy huge electricity demand by purchasing nuclear reactors

(Patria) - To satisfy the huge energy demand of its artificial intelligence data centers, American giant Google has entered into an agreement to purchase several nuclear reactors.

The technology corporation has ordered six or seven small nuclear reactors from the Californian energy company "Kairos Power". The first will be operational by 2030, and the others by 2035.

Google hopes to thus ensure an environmentally friendly solution for powering its artificial intelligence data centers, which require huge amounts of electricity.

"Nuclear reactors are a clean and constant source of energy that will help us reliably meet our electricity needs," Google stated.

The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence, as well as large server centers for cloud data storage, has increased the demand for electricity.

Last month, Microsoft entered into an agreement with the "Three Mile Island" nuclear power plant, which led to the plant, where a nuclear accident occurred in 1979, being activated for the first time in five years.

Amazon has also purchased a data center powered by energy from the "Talen Energy" nuclear power plant.

The locations of the new power plants and the financial details of the agreement have not yet been disclosed.

Google has agreed to purchase a total of 500 megawatts of electricity from "Kairos", which is already building a demonstration reactor in Tennessee, planned to be completed by 2027.

"The electricity grid needs new energy sources to support the development of artificial intelligence, on which scientific and economic progress depends, and which increases national competitiveness and economic growth," said Michael Terrell, Director of Energy and Climate at Google.
