Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova ends her career

(Patria) - Petra Kvitova (35) has officially ended her career at the US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the season.

The Czech player announced her retirement in June, and has now followed through on her words.

In the first round in New York, she suffered a convincing defeat against the world's 107th-ranked player, Diane Parry, with a score of 6:1, 6:0.

The tennis world, however, will remember her not for her final defeats, but for her great successes.

Her biggest achievements came on the grass of Wimbledon, where she won two titles in 2011 and 2014.

Her powerful serve and devastating left-handed forehand made her almost unbeatable at the time.

Kvitova also went through difficult times in her career. In 2017, she was attacked by a burglar who posed as a boiler repairman and seriously injured her with a knife.

It seemed her career was over then, but she returned and played in the Australian Open final in 2019.

Although she had occasional ups and downs, the decision to retire became clear after she gave birth to her first child in 2024.

She entered the 2025 season aware that the end was near. At the US Open, the tournament where her best result was reaching the quarterfinals in 2015 and 2017, she put an end to her rich tennis career.
