(Patria) - Today is May 1st, International Labour Day, which is celebrated on the day when workers in Chicago in 1886 began to fight for an eight-hour workday through strikes and protests.
International Labour Day represents a day of solidarity for working people around the world.
It has been celebrated since 1890 following a decision made at the 1st Congress of the Second International in Paris in July 1889.
The reason for this decision was the bloodily suppressed strike of 40,000 Chicago workers on May 1, 1886. They demanded 8 hours of work, 8 hours of rest, and 8 hours for cultural development.
The Congress decided that every year on May 1st, the working class would manifest its solidarity through demonstrations in the fight for the eight-hour workday.
Already in 1890 and in the following years, May 1st was celebrated with mass rallies and demonstrations by the proletariat, as well as clashes with the police.
In France, for example, more than 100,000 workers participated in Paris alone.
In our country, the first demonstrations were held in 1906.
After World War II, May 1st began to be celebrated in the spirit of the fight for world peace.
