Brnabić calls Belgrade elections for June 2

(Patria) - President of the National Assembly of Serbia Ana Brnabić today called the Belgrade elections for June 2, after two days of unsuccessful negotiations between the authorities and the opposition on election conditions and recommendations from ODIHR.

Brnabić says that calling elections for the councillors of the Belgrade City Assembly for June 2 was her legal obligation.

She adds that she chose the last possible date for calling the elections because "at the request of the opposition and the explicit plea of the President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić, it was decided that these elections should be held at the latest possible date in accordance with the Constitution and laws of Serbia".

Brnabić emphasized that the time before the elections was used to try to initiate dialogue and, through discussions with all parliamentary political actors, do everything to ensure that these and all future elections proceed in the best possible order in accordance with democratic standards and to show the seriousness and responsibility owed to all citizens of Serbia.

- My door remains open for dialogue if there is even a little desire to show the citizens of Serbia that we can sometimes work together on matters important to citizens, regardless of their political affinities - said Brnabić.

She called on all political parties and coalitions to compete with ideas and plans and to ensure that the election race is fair and correct.
