Former American Olympian's 10 medals destroyed in Los Angeles fire

(Patria) - Former American swimmer Gary Hall Jr. lost ten Olympic medals in a fire that engulfed his home in Los Angeles.

- We had about three minutes to react. I chose my dog instead of the Olympic medals - Hall told the BBC, as reported by Index.hr.

The athlete, who represented the USA at the 1996, 2000, and 2004 Olympic Games, says he saw a cloud of smoke, and moments later, flames, coming from his home in Pacific Palisades.

When he saw the houses burning, he knew it was time to leave.

- Could I have stayed for another 30 seconds and maybe grabbed the medals? I wasn't prepared to risk it - Hall said.

He also expressed frustration with the American authorities, stating that the righteous anger of many people is understandable.

- We probably pay the most taxes of anyone, yet we have an underfunded fire department - Hall added.

The budget for the Los Angeles Fire Department was reduced by $17.6 million last year.

- We deserve better from the leadership. I hope for a thorough investigation and that the leadership will be held accountable - Hall concluded.
