Alexander Zverev wins Roland Garros

(Patria) - In the men's final of Roland Garros today in Paris, two tennis players who had never won a Grand Slam title faced off.

On one side stood second seed Alexander Zverev, for whom this was his fourth final, while on the other was Flavio Cobolli, who reached this stage of a tournament for the first time in his career.

Although Zverev struggled at times again, he ultimately secured his first Grand Slam title with a 3-2 sets victory.

Cobolli started the match poorly, allowing Zverev a break in the first game. He managed to reduce the deficit to 2:1, but after that Zverev won four consecutive games and moved within two sets of his first Grand Slam title.

The Italian's nerves gave way in the second set, keeping it level until 3:3. At that point, the German's nerves began to show as he missed several opportunities to close out a game for a 4:3 lead.

That ultimately backfired, as Cobolli secured his first break of the match. Without much trouble, he reached 5:3 and was one game away from winning the second set.

Zverev, by winning a game to make it 5:4, forced Cobolli to serve out the set, but that didn't bother the Italian, who lost just one point to win 6:4 and level the match at 1-1 in sets.

In the third set, there were no breaks until 5:4 for Zverev, and even then it seemed there would be no service break. The Italian led 30-0 but lost four consecutive points, and Zverev took a 2-1 lead in sets.

Thus, for the third time in his career, he was one set away from winning a Grand Slam. He had been in that situation in the US Open final against Dominic Thiem and in the Roland Garros final against Carlos Alcaraz.

Cobolli opened the fourth set with a break that the German practically gifted him. Namely, Zverev made two double faults and sent a "sitter" wide on break point.

Shortly after the break, the Italian held his serve and took a 2:0 lead. He maintained that advantage until 3:2, when he first offered the German three consecutive break points. He saved them successfully, but with two more errors, he brought Zverev back into the set.

However, the world number three did not embrace that comeback with open arms, and with another poor game, he allowed Cobolli to regain the break advantage and lead 4:3.

With minor difficulties, the Italian confirmed the break and was one game away from winning the set that would take the match to a deciding set.

First, Zverev reduced the deficit to 5:4, and then with several nice winners, he broke back and returned to the set.

This time, he did not allow Cobolli another break and won the game to make it 6:5. Thus, he was one game away from his first Grand Slam title.

The Italian then managed to stop Zverev's streak of three consecutive games and took the set to a tie-break, the first of the match.

It was a particularly dramatic tie-break. First, Cobolli took a mini-break with a brilliant point, after which Zverev won three points to take a 3-1 lead.

Then Cobolli won four consecutive points and moved within two points of the set. With an excellent drop shot, he reached two set points.

He missed the first with a botched smash, but converted the second with a phenomenal forehand winner.

Zverev opened the fifth set with a break, and it seemed his first Grand Slam title was getting closer. He confirmed that break after saving a break point, and then in the third game, he broke again to move within just three games of winning Roland Garros.

The Italian had a chance to reduce the deficit to 3:1, but on the second break point, he missed a smash, and Zverev saved himself and ultimately won the game for 4:0.

Although Cobolli reduced the deficit to 4:1, he could not orchestrate a comeback, and Zverev thus won his first Grand Slam title in his fourth attempt with a score of 6:1, 4:6, 6:4, 6:7(5), 6:1.

The German thus took advantage of Carlos Alcaraz's withdrawal, the stumbles of Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic, and at the age of 30 achieved the greatest success of his career.
