Alcaraz to miss Roland Garros due to injury

(Patria) - Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from Roland Garros due to a wrist injury, a month before the start of the second Grand Slam tournament of the season, where he was supposed to defend his title.

Alcaraz injured himself in his first match in Barcelona, in a victory over Finn Otto Virtanen.

The Spaniard withdrew from Barcelona after that match, but it was initially thought to be just a precautionary measure ahead of the important Masters tournaments and Roland Garros.

However, photos soon emerged showing Alcaraz with a serious bandage around his wrist, leading to speculation that the injury was more serious than initially thought.

Confirmation came quickly: first, the world number two withdrew from Madrid, and now from Roland Garros.

"After the test results we got today, we decided that the most sensible thing to do is to be cautious and not participate in Rome and Roland Garros until we assess the further development of the situation and decide when we will return to the court.

This is a difficult moment for me, but I am sure I will come out stronger from this," the 22-year-old wrote on social media.

Let's recall, the Spaniard was supposed to defend his title in Paris after defeating Italian Jannik Sinner 3-2 in sets in the final last year, in one of the best Grand Slam finals ever.
