(Patria) - Carlos Alcaraz is the new Australian Open champion.
Alcaraz celebrated in the final against Novak Djokovic in Melbourne 3:1 in sets (2:6; 6:2; 6:3: 7:5) after three hours of tennis. Thus he reached his first Australian Open trophy in his career, and his seventh Grand Slam at only 22 years of age.
In the first set, we watched 33 minutes of tennis, and Djokovic, with a double break, managed to establish his game and deservedly win the first set.
The player from Belgrade made breaks in the fourth and eighth games of the first set for 6:2.
The second set lasted three minutes longer, and the 22-year-old from Murcia returned the favor.
Breaks in the third and seventh games of the second set were key, and the Spanish tennis player reached the tie.
The key moment of the third set occurred in the fifth game when Alcaraz took Djokovic's serve.
Alcaraz did not allow the 38-year-old any break opportunities in set number three, so after a marathon game, he made a break for the second time to turn the tide and win 6:3.
The fourth set started with a confident lead for Alcaraz, and then in the second game, we watched a real marathon.
The game lasted more than 10 minutes, during which Djokovic saved as many as six break points and stayed in the match.
Djokovic reached a break opportunity at 30:40 with the score at 4:4, but sent the ball wide with a poor forehand. After that, Alcaraz's magic for the lead, he pulled off an incredible shot from the baseline - a top-spin forehand and after that took a new point won to lead 5:4.
The winner of 24 Grand Slams remained calm and, with experience, equalized at 5:5 and took the match further.
In the end, Alcaraz was more composed, took a 6:5 lead, then waited for Djokovic's errors in the 12th game and reached victory with a break.
This was the seventh Grand Slam in the career of the 22-year-old from Murcia, and interestingly, his first Australian Open.
Until today, he had won Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open twice each.
Novak Djokovic had won the previous 10 Australian Open finals, and this was his first loss in the Melbourne final.
With this title, Alcaraz will cement his place as number 1 on the ATP list, while Djokovic will jump to third place on the list of the world's best tennis players.
