(Patria) - Peace activist Aida Ćorović received a summons today to report for the execution of her prison sentence because she refused to pay the fine imposed for throwing eggs at the mural of war criminal Ratko Mladić.
In a statement to Radio Free Europe (RSE), Ćorović says she has been given eight days to report to the "Padinska skela" prison to serve a three-month sentence.
Ćorović, along with activist Jelena Jaćimović, was detained after throwing several eggs at the mural of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić in Njegoševa Street in Belgrade on the International Day of Fight Against Fascism.
On December 14, she received a final verdict from the Misdemeanor Appellate Court for a fine of 100,000 dinars (approximately 850 euros).
Ćorović told RSE that she stands by her decision not to pay the fine. She adds that such actions should constantly maintain the "visibility of the issue".
- I don't want to make a victim of myself, but in the long run, it is important that we address the issue of why they are so keen on Mladić being a hero at all costs. A man convicted of the most horrific war crime since World War II - emphasizes Ćorović.
The verdict of the Misdemeanor Appellate Court states that Ćorović violated the Law on Public Order and Peace by "throwing eggs in the direction of a residential building" and insulting police officers while performing their duties.
When asked if she would report to prison in eight days, Ćorović told RSE that she is not running away from the summons but will try to postpone the execution of the sentence in court for personal reasons.
