(Patria) - Eight people have been arrested for corruption in the healthcare system in Croatia, including the head of the Department for Clinical and Molecular Microbiology at the University Hospital Center Zagreb, Ana Budimir.
The focus of the USKOK investigation is the company "Ermed solušn", which supplied antibacterial water filters to the University Hospital Center Zagreb, the portal "Indeks" has learned.
Investigators suspect that employees at the hospital, including Budimir, adjusted the terms of the public tender so that the company "Ermed solušn" could win.
In exchange for preferential treatment, Budimir received a bribe worth around 10,000 euros in the form of a trip to Paris and the construction of a fence around her family home.
USKOK has a range of evidence collected through secret surveillance measures that lasted for almost a year.
Budimir is the president of the Commission for the Prevention and Control of Hospital Infections at the Croatian Ministry of Health, and is known to the public for her expert statements on the prevention of hospital infections. During the coronavirus epidemic, she represented the University Hospital Center Zagreb as the vaccination coordinator.
