President of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, seized the opportunity of marking the anniversary of the battle on Kozara, to confront his political opponents and praise the entity that he has ruled with absolute sovereignty.
On the 75th anniversary of one of the most important battles of the WWII, Dodik said that Kozara represented a symbol of anti-fascist campaign. It is a historical fact indeed that the Kozara battle remains one of the symbols of the anti-fascist fight, however, the kind of anti-fascist campaign such was Kozara has nothing in common with Dodik and the rhetoric he uses to brainwash increasingly unhappy people of the RS.
In his speech, Dodik accused the entire former communist system as, according to him, it had not done enough to mark the places of tragedy of the Serbs in Kozara region. President of the RS reckoned that such tragedy would not have happened to the Serb people had there been Republika Srpska to protect them.
Considering the way Republika Srpska was created in the first place, it is far better for the Serb people that Republika Srpska did not exist, as it would not have protected them – instead, it would have been the closest ally of the Independent State of Croatia under which the biggest crimes were committed over Serb population.
It was quite a few times that Milorad Dodik boastfully spoke about his close relatives who had been killed as members of partisans, however, he seemed to have alienated from them given his attitude towards the anti-fascism and the WWII events.
The entity that Dodik presides, will have seen a monument built for chetnik duke Lazar Tesanovic, who is remembered in Kozara as a signatory of a cooperation agreement between chetniks and ustashas, which had probably led to the aforementioned killings of Dodik's relatives.
The RS police does not allow members of anti-fascist associations to sing partisan songs, yet it does not react to signing of chetnik songs.
Buying a souvenir with a red star in Kozara is almost impossible (except for a T-shirt with Belgrade soccer team 'Partizan'), however, there is a variety of souvenirs and T-shirts with pictures of Draza Mihailovic, Ratko Mladic, Radovan Karadzic and other charged and convicted war criminals.
As much as Milorad Dodik boasts about the values of Republika Srpska, there is no doubt that Adolf Hitler, had Republika Srpska existed at the time of the WWII, would have built a weekend house in Laktasi or elsewhere in the surrounding area.
It is only there that he would have felt absolutely safe.
