Do you know the real name of the New York Statue of Liberty?

(Patria) - If someone told you they wanted to visit the monument "Liberty Enlightening the World," you would probably think twice and ask which monument they actually mean.

However, if your interlocutor replied that they meant the lady holding a torch in her hand and greeting New Yorkers and their guests, you would quickly realize that this is the official name of the Statue of Liberty.

This world-famous monument was made in Paris, and the French gave it to the Americans for the 100th anniversary of independence at the end of the 19th century, reports Punkufer.

The statue was created by Frederic Bartholdi, and the interior with the iron framework was made by the company of Gustave Eiffel, who went down in history thanks to the tower of the same name.

At one point, its construction stalled - due to what else but - finances, but it was eventually completed. And so, on October 28, 1886, it was solemnly unveiled at the mouth of the Hudson River.

The opening ceremony itself was led by then-US President Grover Cleveland.

Over time, it gained immense symbolic importance, as it became the first symbol of the USA that immigrants arriving by ship at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century would see.

The statue itself is 46 meters high, but with the pedestal it reaches 93 meters. It weighs more than 200 tons, and on its head it wears a crown with seven rays, inspired by the crown of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven ancient wonders of the world.

Due to its great importance, it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1984.
