White House Wishes: Artificial Intelligence Risks to National Security and Economy Must Be Addressed

(Patria) - Risks of artificial intelligence (AI) to national security and the economy must be addressed, said US President Joe Biden, adding that he will seek expert advice, reported Reuters.

“My administration is committed to protecting the rights and safety of Americans, while protecting privacy, addressing bias and misinformation, ensuring that AI systems are safe before they are released,” Biden said in San Francisco.

Biden met with a group of leaders and civil society advocates, who have previously criticized the influence of large technology companies, to discuss artificial intelligence.

“I wanted to hear directly from experts,” he said.

Several governments are considering how to mitigate the dangers of the new technology, which has seen a surge in investment and consumer popularity in recent months following the release of OpenAI ChatGPT. Regulators globally are trying to create rules that regulate the use of generative artificial intelligence, which can create text and images, and whose impact has been compared to the impact of the internet.

Biden recently discussed the issue of artificial intelligence with other world leaders, including British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, whose government will host the first global AI safety summit later this year. Biden is expected to discuss this topic with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the US.

Members of the European Union parliament agreed last week on changes to the draft rules on artificial intelligence proposed by the European Commission in an attempt to set a global standard for technology used in everything from automated factories to cars to chatbots.
