(Patria) - According to the latest data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), new car sales in the European Union have increased by almost 16% in the last 11 months.
New data confirms a 15.7% increase in the European Union car market in the last 11 months compared to the same period last year, with 9,681,752 cars sold in the period January-November 2023.
Of the nearly 10 million vehicles sold in 2023, 3.5 million were gasoline-powered, 3.23 million were hybrids, and 1.37 million were electric. Gasoline cars remain the most sought after with a share of over 35%, while the popularity of diesel is constantly declining.
In November alone, 885,581 new cars were sold in EU member states, which means an increase of 6.7% compared to the same month last year. The increase in electric car registrations was 16.4%, with a total of 144,378 units delivered.
Several markets contributed to this growth with double-digit and triple-digit percentage increases, especially Belgium (+150.2%), which is now the fifth largest market by volume. However, electric car sales in Germany fell by 22.5%, and will fall even further in the coming period, as Germans have abolished subsidies.
Looking at countries, Italy had the largest growth in the January-November period, with a growth of 20% compared to the same period in 2022. Spain (+17.3%), France (+16.2%), Romania (+14%), and Germany (+11.4%) were also in the positive.
When looking at sales by brand, Volkswagen continues to lead the list of best-sellers as the only one with over a million deliveries. It is followed by Toyota and Renault, which has returned to third place. Among electric brands, Tesla is the only one with a huge increase (+115%) compared to 2022. The American manufacturer delivered almost 250,000 vehicles to the EU market in 11 months.
