Renowned actor Donald Sutherland has died

(Patria) - Renowned actor Donald Sutherland has died at the age of 88 after a long illness, reports Index.hr.

"It is with great sadness that I announce that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally consider him one of the most important actors in the history of film. He was never afraid of a role, whether it was good, bad, or ugly.

He loved what he did and he did what he loved, you can't ask for more than that in life. A life well lived," announced his son Kiefer Sutherland, also a renowned actor.

Donald Sutherland was born in Canada on July 17, 1935, and his career spanned over 50 years.

Some of his most notable roles include atypical warriors from films like The Dirty Dozen, M*A*S*H, and Kelly's Heroes, or a detective from the thriller Klute.

More recently, he starred in the American TV series Dirty Sexy Money, as well as the Hunger Games franchise.

In his youth, he was a radio journalist, and at the same time, he graduated in mechanical engineering and dramatic arts.

In the early 1960s, he played minor roles in British films and TV series, and he stood out mainly in horror films with Christopher Lee, and twice in the series The Saint.

In 1967, he starred in The Dirty Dozen, the first of three war films that brought him success.

In 1970, he was the lead actor in the thriller Klute alongside Jane Fonda, with whom he produced the anti-war film F.T.A. in 1972.

Also in the seventies, he played a series of leading roles, including in the psychological horror Don't Look Now (1974), the war thriller The Eagle Has Landed (1976), the title role in the biographical film Il Casanova di Federico Fellini (1976), or in the science fiction film Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978).

He also achieved success with Bernardo Bertolucci's epic film 1900, as well as the drama Ordinary People (1980), Robert Redford's directorial debut.

During the 1980s and 1990s, some of Sutherland's most famous roles were in the South African drama A Dry White Season (1989), the action film Backdraft (1991), and the drama Six Degrees of Separation (1993).
