Uk and Mijatović visit Sarajevo International Airport: KS Government plans to subsidise airlines that would open new routes

(Patria) - Prime Minister of Sarajevo Canton Nihad Uk and Minister of Economy of Sarajevo Canton Zlatko Mijatović visited Sarajevo International Airport today, where they met with director Alan Bajić and executive director for traffic and air traffic services Elvedin Begić.

One of the topics of the meeting was the intention of the Government of Sarajevo Canton to subsidise airlines that would open new routes connecting Sarajevo with numerous other cities. The targeted subsidies would be for companies that establish a base in Sarajevo or introduce new routes to cities assessed as being of strategic interest for connecting with Sarajevo, or for companies that would establish long-haul flights.

"The Government of Sarajevo Canton will directly assist in opening new air routes that will directly connect Sarajevo with European cities. This is a multiple benefit for the Canton. Besides the fact that it ensures better connectivity with other European cities and provides our citizens with more efficient travel options, it additionally represents multiple economic potential, primarily for tourism. This subsidy model has long been present in EU cities, as well as in our region, and produces incredible effects," emphasised Prime Minister Uk.

Also, Prime Minister Uk and Minister Mijatović toured the works currently being carried out at Sarajevo Airport with the hosts.

The expansion and modernisation of Terminal B have significantly increased the airport's spatial and technological capacities. In addition, works are underway as part of the second phase of the project, which includes the modernisation of the old part of the Terminal, interior works, expansion of the Duty Free Shop and new spaces for support services.
