In the Quiet Zone, mobile phones, Wi-Fi and all other devices that use radio waves are banned

(Patria) - The National Radio Quiet Zone (NRQZ), or simply the Quiet Zone, spans approximately 33,670 square kilometers on the border between Virginia and West Virginia, and part of Maryland in the USA.

In this rural area surrounded by mountains and forests, the use of mobile phones, Wi-Fi, microwave ovens, and other devices that use radio waves is prohibited, reports Punkufer.



Most transmitters in the central area of the Quiet Zone must operate at reduced power to avoid interfering with the work of scientists concentrated around the Green Bank Observatory, which houses one of the largest radio telescopes in the world.

This astronomical device for receiving and measuring the strength of cosmic radio waves has a "dish" with a diameter of as much as 100 meters, and is named after former U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd, who advocated for its funding and construction.

This steerable radio telescope has been key to several important space discoveries since it was built and installed in West Virginia in 2000.

The Quiet Zone also attracts numerous creatives, writers, and artists who enjoy being "off the grid," as well as people suffering from electromagnetic hypersensitivity.



The syndrome of electrosensitivity, or the so-called allergy to electromagnetic radiation emitted by gadgets and base stations, was first recorded in the 1930s, and manifests through severe headaches, changes in breathing, rapid heartbeat, and the like.

A space where modern-day gadgets are banned seems like a perfect place to live for such people.
