First baby born in Italian village after 30 years

(Patria) - The birth of baby Lara Bussi Trabucco in the village of Pagliara dei Marsi in the Italian region of Abruzzo has become a symbol of hope in a country facing a deep demographic crisis.



Lara is the first baby born in the village in nearly 30 years, and her arrival has increased the population to around 20.

Practically the entire community attended the baptism in the local church, writes The Guardian.

Her mother, music teacher Cinzia Trabucco, moved from Rome to her grandfather's native village with the desire to raise a child away from the city bustle, while her partner Paolo Bussi is a local construction worker.



Italy has been facing a so-called demographic winter for years – 2024 saw a historic low in births, with a fertility rate of only 1.18 children per woman.

The trend is particularly pronounced in the Abruzzo region, where the number of newborns further decreased during 2025.

The government of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has introduced financial incentives such as the "baby bonus" and monthly allowances, which Lara's family also received.



However, parents and local officials warn that money is not enough.

The lack of kindergartens, the closure of schools and maternity wards, precarious jobs, and poor support for working mothers remain key issues.
