In the capital of Cyprus, you get the impression you are in Greece and Turkey at the same time

(Patria) - Although there are many unusual places in Europe, Nicosia, Cyprus is certainly one of the strangest.

Within one rather small city, there are practically two separate states, each with its own currency, time zone, laws, and generally different way of life, travel writer Robert Dacešin, whose curiosity led him to the divided Mediterranean island, introduces us to the story, writes Punkufer.

Cyprus is an island nation in the eastern Mediterranean, and has long been a crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa. In 1974, it was divided into a southern, larger part inhabited predominantly by Greeks, and a smaller northern part – the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

- In a place of about 200,000 inhabitants in a very small area, you have the opportunity to experience two completely different cultures. On one hand, you can walk through streets like those in Greece and try Greek food, and a few meters down, get the impression you are in the center of Turkey.

Between these two parts, there is a buffer zone created by the United Nations to regulate the lives of residents in these two parts of Cyprus.
