The Secret of Longevity: What Do People Who Live to 100 Eat?

(Patria) - Centenarians, people who live to 100 and beyond, have long been a subject of scientific interest, and their diet is particularly intriguing. Although longevity depends on a number of factors, dietary habits play a key role. This is precisely why the so-called Blue Zones – regions with an unusually high number of centenarians – have become the focus of numerous studies. Such places include Loma Linda in California, Nicoya in Costa Rica, Sardinia in Italy, Ikaria in Greece, and Okinawa in Japan.

The diet in these communities is based mainly on plant-based foods. The key is unprocessed, whole foods such as beans, whole grains, fresh vegetables and fruit, with water as the primary source of hydration. Meat and dairy products are not forbidden, but moderation is emphasized, as is mindful eating – residents of Okinawa often stop eating when they feel 80% full.

Below are ten foods that are present in the diet of the world's longest-living people, which, according to current knowledge, contribute to healthy aging and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

1. Legumes

Beans and similar legumes are the foundation of the diet in the Blue Zones. In addition to being rich in fiber, vitamins and protein, they help regulate blood sugar, strengthen heart and gut health, and reduce inflammation thanks to their high antioxidant content.

2. Leafy greens

Spinach, kale, chard and similar types of leafy greens are rich in vitamins and minerals, support brain and heart function, boost immunity and slow cognitive decline thanks to compounds like lutein and folate.

3. Nuts and seeds

Pistachios, walnuts, almonds and other types of nuts and seeds are rich in healthy fats, fiber and protein, and are also known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

4. Whole grains

Quinoa, brown rice, wholemeal flour and sourdough bread are part of the menu in the Blue Zones. In addition to providing sustained energy, they positively affect digestion and help regulate blood sugar and cholesterol.

5. Olive oil

As a cornerstone of the Mediterranean diet, olive oil contributes to the health of the heart, liver, kidneys, digestion and brain. Its antioxidant properties also slow aging and protect against oxidative stress.

6. Turmeric

This spice is often used in teas and cooked dishes in the Blue Zones. It can help reduce inflammation, boost immunity, improve memory and protect the brain from neurodegenerative diseases.

7. Sweet potato

Especially the purple sweet potato from Okinawa shows anti-aging potential. It is a food rich in fiber and antioxidants that helps fight inflammation.

8. Fish and seafood

In coastal Blue Zones, fish and seafood are consumed regularly. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids that contribute to the health of the heart, brain and muscle mass.

9. Fruit

Fruit is a daily presence on the tables of centenarians. It provides an abundance of vitamins, fiber and antioxidants, and helps regulate body weight, blood sugar and heart health.

10. Teas

Green and herbal teas made from local herbs are part of daily life in the Blue Zones. Due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, teas can reduce the risk of numerous chronic diseases, including diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and certain types of cancer.

The dietary patterns of centenarians are not based on diets, but on simple, natural and local food, consumed with moderation and attention – which makes them not only longer-lived, but also healthier.
