(Patria) - The Government of Switzerland and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today signed a financial agreement to strengthen cooperation on improving the circular economy in BiH, within the framework of the Portfolio "Support for accelerating the green transition in BiH".
The partnership will contribute to the country's transformation towards a resource-efficient, low-carbon, and inclusive economy by promoting circular economy models and innovations that reduce waste and negative environmental impact.
The circular economy component builds upon existing activities within the Green Transition Portfolio, which promotes cleaner air, sustainable energy, and green jobs across the country.
The agreement was signed at the United Nations building in Sarajevo by the Deputy Head of Mission and Director for International Cooperation of the Swiss Embassy in BiH, Georgette Bruchez, and the UNDP Resident Representative in BiH, Renaud Meyer.
- Switzerland is proud to support Bosnia and Herzegovina's transition towards economic and environmentally sustainable and inclusive development, in line with the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans.
The circular economy plays a key role in improving resource efficiency and fostering innovation. It also creates sustainable economic opportunities and supports Bosnia and Herzegovina's alignment with European environmental and economic standards - said Bruchez.
Meyer stated that the circular economy is at the very heart of the green transition - it changes the way we produce, consume, and value resources.
- This partnership with Switzerland reflects our shared commitment to creating a cleaner, more resilient, and inclusive future for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
By expanding circular practices, we can help businesses become more competitive, create new green jobs, encourage changes in citizens' habits, and improve the quality of life for people and communities - added Meyer.
The circular economy initiative within the Green Transition Portfolio will focus on strengthening the framework for sustainable growth by providing support in policy creation, capacity building, and targeted support to government institutions across Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Portfolio "Support for accelerating the green transition in Bosnia and Herzegovina" is a joint initiative of the United Nations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, led by UNDP, co-chaired by the UN Resident Coordinator and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH, with the support and strategic partnership of Sweden and Switzerland.
The Portfolio brings together UN agencies, including FAO, ILO, UNECE, UNEP, UNODC, and UN Women - together with national institutions and authorities at all levels, to accelerate the country's green, inclusive, and sustainable transition through four key areas: decarbonization, pollution reduction, biodiversity and nature, and circular economy.
