Courtroom from the 'Gavrilo Princip' trial becomes part of the Museum of Sarajevo's exhibition

(Patria) - The Public Institution Museum of Sarajevo and the Cantonal Court in Sarajevo officially completed the handover of a valuable collection of furniture from the Austro-Hungarian period, originating from the historic courtroom where the trial against Gavrilo Princip was held.

The handover protocol was signed by the President of the Cantonal Court in Sarajevo, Jasenka Potogija, and the Director of the Museum of Sarajevo, Indira Kučuk-Sorguč, thereby permanently entrusting this significant collection to the Museum of Sarajevo for safekeeping, protection, and public presentation.

This is authentic court inventory from the Austro-Hungarian period, including a judge's desk, tables for parties and court clerks, a work desk, a display cabinet, a chair, a large bench, a railing, a speaker's stand, a filing cabinet, and a set of twenty books from the same period. This collection has been exhibited in the hall of the Palace of Justice in Sarajevo since 2011. The donation was made with the aim of improving storage and security conditions, as well as enabling adequate museum presentation of this exceptionally valuable segment of cultural and historical heritage.

By taking over the historic courtroom, the Museum of Sarajevo further enriches its collections and opens up possibilities for creating an authentic museum exhibition that testifies to one of the most significant historical trials of the early 20th century, deeply connected to global events.

"By taking over this exceptionally valuable collection, the Museum of Sarajevo is not just acquiring furniture, but also an authentic historical space, a testament to a time and events that marked not only Sarajevo but also world history. It is our responsibility to preserve this courtroom, process it professionally, and present it to the public in a way that allows for an understanding of its historical significance. We are particularly pleased that we will enable the citizens and visitors of Sarajevo to experience the ambiance in which one of the most important court proceedings of the 20th century took place. We thank the Cantonal Court in Sarajevo for the trust shown and for recognizing the role of the Museum of Sarajevo as a guardian of cultural and historical heritage," stated Kučuk-Sorguč.

"The Cantonal Court in Sarajevo made the decision to donate this collection, taking into account its historical value and the need for it to be adequately protected and accessible to the public. We believe that the Museum of Sarajevo is the most appropriate institution for the preservation and presentation of this heritage, which transcends the judicial framework and represents a part of broader cultural and historical memory. This handover is an example of the responsible attitude of institutions towards heritage, and we are convinced that the collection will receive the context and visibility it deserves in the museum," emphasized the President of the Cantonal Court, Jasenka Potogija.

This act represents an important step in institutional cooperation and joint care for the preservation of the cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
