Residents of Malmö's Curved Futuristic Skyscraper Heat Their Homes with Their Own Waste

(Patria) - About ten years ago, Malmö began transitioning from an industrial city to an urban centre with no shortage of content, events and entertainment.

This year's Eurovision Song Contest - Eurosong 2024 proved that once again, reports Punkufer.

The crown of the city's renaissance in western Sweden was the construction of a curved futuristic building, the first self-sustaining skyscraper of its kind in the world.

When it opened its doors in 2005, the curved Turning Torso, at 190 metres, was the tallest skyscraper in Scandinavia, the tallest residential building in the EU, and the second tallest in Europe.

Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava was inspired by a marble sculpture of a twisted torso, which also served as the inspiration for the skyscraper's name.

The 57-storey building is divided into nine sections that twist as they rise.

The pentagonal floors rotate around a vertical core, shaped like a concrete tube, supported by a steel frame.

The skyscraper's spine twists 90 degrees from the ground floor to the top.

Part of the space is used for offices, while the rest houses 147 luxury apartments - from one to a maximum of five on each floor.

Turning Torso is one of the pioneers of self-sustaining architecture, which earned it professional recognition at the time.

The energy consumed in the apartments comes from renewable sources - sun, water and wind - as well as organic waste that residents dispose of in designated areas.

The skyscraper itself provides up to one hundred percent of the thermal energy residents use for heating.

All safety systems have backup power, including elevators and lighting, and thanks to a dual water supply system, it is highly unlikely that anyone will be left without water, even when they need to shower and head to work.
