(Patria) - Japanese electronics manufacturer Sony has reached a new milestone for its PlayStation 5 gaming console, as its sales have exceeded 50 million units sold.
The company announced that the PlayStation 5 (PS5) has gained strong momentum again this year, aided by the success of video games such as Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Baldur's Gate 3, and Alan Wake 2, reports AFP.
According to market insiders, this is a staggering figure, as the PS5 has not been fully available at retail for half of its lifecycle.
The console was launched in November 2020, when the world was gripped by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in supply chain issues and a global chip shortage.
- We are delighted that this holiday season is the first time we have had a full supply of PS5 gaming consoles - said Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The company points out that the PlayStation 5 console reached the mark of 50 million units sold in almost the same period as its predecessor, the PlayStation 4.
Sony launched its first console in 1994 and has since become a major player in the gaming console market, reports SEEbiz.
Analysts predict that the company's revenue this year should exceed 53 billion dollars.
Sony's best-selling gaming console remains the PlayStation 2 with over 155 million units sold, while the PlayStation 4 surpassed 117 million.
Since 2001, Microsoft's Xbox gaming consoles have become PlayStation's main challengers.
Although Microsoft has strengthened its market position in recent years, according to analysts, the PS5 still outsells the latest Xbox gaming consoles.
