Sisters find backpack of mountaineer father who died in 1985.

(Patria) - Two daughters of an Argentinian mountaineer, who died 40 years ago, found his backpack, which had been trapped in ice, and film rolls that helped them learn more about their father's final moments.

Guillermo Vieiro was 44 years old when he died in 1985 while descending from the snow-covered Argentinian volcano Tupungato, over 6,500 meters high, on the border with Chile.

His body and that of another mountaineer were found, but not their belongings.

Last year, mountaineer Gabriela Cavallaro found a backpack in the ice from which she managed to retrieve only a camera and an ice axe.

After it was determined that these items belonged to Guillermo Vieiro, she contacted his daughters, who had climbed the area below Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America at 6,962 meters, several times.



In February, Guadalupe and Azul Vieiro, now 40 and 44 years old, embarked on an 11-day filmed expedition to find the backpack, which had appeared at an altitude of 6,100 meters.

- In my family, the word 'mountain' has always been forbidden. My mother wants nothing to do with the discovery of this backpack. It's a family broken by grief, by emptiness - said Azul Viero, who was only four years old when her father died.

Inside the backpack, they found a jacket, a sleeping bag, a water bottle, aspirin, vitamin C tablets, knives, and two rolls of Super 8 film.

The sisters say they were able to learn more about their father, whom they barely knew.



- My mother never told us who he was, we knew he died in the mountains, but nothing else, so it was like rediscovering his story - said Azul Viero.

The footage showed that Guillermo Vieiro and his climbing partner Leonardo Rabal (20) were the first mountaineers to reach the summit of Tupungato via its most difficult, eastern side.
