SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Sudanese warring factions have agreed to a new 72-hour ceasefire starting at 6 AM local time on Sunday, mediators Saudi Arabia and the United States said in a joint statement.
"The parties have agreed that during the truce, they will refrain from prohibited movements, attacks, use of military aircraft or drones, artillery strikes, fortifying positions and supplying forces, and will refrain from seeking military advantage during the ceasefire," the statement said, Reuters reported.
Fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces is entering its third month, and neither side has a clear advantage. The war has displaced 2.2 million Sudanese and killed hundreds, and the Darfur region has been pushed into a "humanitarian catastrophe," the United Nations said.
Since the beginning of the conflict, Saudi Arabia and the United States have been trying to play the role of mediators.
