(Patria) - Summer is a time when we face high temperatures and fluid loss, which can cause dehydration and fatigue. Therefore, special attention should be paid to diet. So we sought advice from a nutritionist on
what food will hydrate, refresh, and nourish us, while at the same time not burdening our digestive system.
The answers were provided by Kenan Mandra, the most famous nutritionist in the region and author of the renowned Liposuction Diet, whose answers will, as always, surprise you.
- Although during extreme heat we would most like to drink ice-cold water or eat ice cream, we see people living in the Sahara cooling themselves with hot tea or soup. Cold water will only cool the throat, but if you drink hot tea, coffee, or soup, the body will receive a signal that it needs cooling, so it will activate sweat glands, which is the most effective mechanism of natural cooling -
states Mandra and adds:
- Peppermint tea contains a large amount of menthol, a compound known for its fresh scent, but also for the fact that it activates cold-sensitive receptors in the body, thus providing a pleasant cooling sensation. Perfect for summer heat. Besides it, thyme and chamomile are recommended – says the most famous nutritionist in the region.
Foods that protect the skin
Lost fluids are best replenished by consuming water – both directly and indirectly from water-rich foods.
- Berries such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and currants are currently available, which have a low sugar content, are rich in phytonutrients, and have an anti-inflammatory effect. Red, yellow, and orange fruits and vegetables contain plant pigments and have an antioxidant effect. Therefore, it is advisable to enjoy apricots, peaches, melons, watermelons, carrots, and other colorful fruits and
vegetables in the summer.
Summer diet should be rich in nutrients that protect against harmful solar radiation, thus helping in the prevention of skin cancer, preventing wrinkles, and premature skin aging.
Vegetables in the form of cucumbers, tomatoes, and lettuce, drizzled with olive oil and salted, because due to increased sweating, the body also loses a large amount of sodium - advises the author of the famous Liposuction Diet.
Mediterranean diet and fasting
Kenan recommends not drinking water one hour before or one hour after meals.
- In summer, appetite is also reduced, so try to abstain as much as possible. During the summer, it is enough to have a light fruit breakfast and a Mediterranean dinner, and in between, cool yourself with tea and coffee. For breakfast, boiled eggs, tomato salad with olive oil are also suitable – and for dinner, proteins and healthy fats from meat, fish, and olive oil. Always finish dinner with a salad or
some fresh vegetables for enzyme intake for digestion - recommends Mandra and adds:
- Eat simple food with few spices. It should be fresh and in small quantities. Try a trick – take half a standard portion but eat half as slowly as usual. You will be surprised after the meal that you will have the same feeling of fullness.
Dietary recommendations during the summer:
• Consume less spicy food
• Eat more raw vegetables – give preference to salads
• Limit fruit quantities as they contain sugar
• Let warm teas and soups cool you down
• Eat fresh food as it spoils more easily in the summer
• Portion size should be half of what you ate in winter
• Avoid alcoholic beverages
The secret of human nutrition
The famous nutritionist points out that when we are very hungry, we enjoy only the first few bites of food.
- In the continuation of the meal, we still have that initial euphoria, but the pleasure is gone, and only the physiological need remains. However, we continue to eat even after we overdo it, as always, we don't feel good from the weight of the food we've eaten, our stomach is full, and we can't breathe normally.
Then, instead of feeling happy, self-contempt sets in –
we feel sluggish, miserable, and powerless! The paradox is not in that, but in the fact that at the very next meal, we repeat the same mistake, and so on. The secret of human nutrition is to learn that it is a physiological need that must be controlled like any other. Therefore, the power of self-control to stop after just a few first bites of food is the key to health, vitality, and
longevity - concludes Mandra.
Summer trick worth its weight in gold – cool your ears!
When you are hot, instead of drinking large amounts of water, the famous nutritionist recommends an interesting trick:
- First, cool your earlobes. Yes, you read that right – he claims that the skin of the earlobe is richly supplied with blood, and blood vessels and our body have the ability to adapt to temperature changes, so heat accumulates on the earlobe.
- When we wash our earlobes and the back of our neck, we will instantly feel cooled and get rid of that heavy feeling of summer heat. When you try this trick, you will thank me - concludes Mandra.
