Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani passed away

(Patria) - Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani passed away at the age of 91.

"With infinite sadness, the Armani Group announces the death of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force Giorgio Armani", the fashion house announced.

Armani was synonymous with modern Italian style and elegance. He combined the creativity of a designer with the insight of a businessman.

He led a company that generated revenue of around 2.3 billion euros annually.

Giorgio Armani was born on July 11, 1934, in Piacenza, Italy.

In his youth, he studied medicine, but after a few years, he left university and turned to fashion.

He worked as a window dresser at the La Rinascente department store in Milan, and later as a designer for Nino Cerruti.

Together with his partner Sergio Galeotti, he founded Armani S.p.A. in 1975.

He quickly became known for his elegant, minimalist cuts and luxurious fabrics. He particularly distinguished himself with men's suits that redefined business style in the 1980s.

He built a fashion empire that includes multiple brands (Giorgio Armani, Emporio Armani, Armani Exchange), as well as lines for perfumes, watches, interiors, and hotels.

His design is often associated with concepts of sophistication, Italian elegance, and timeless luxury.

He also became known for dressing Hollywood stars. For example, Richard Gere wore his suits in the film "American Gigolo" (1980), which further solidified his reputation.

Armani remained at the head of his company until old age, insisting on the brand's independence and refusing to sell to large conglomerates.
