(Patria) - Hollywood actor and director Robert Redford died today at the age of 89, AP reported.
- Redford died at his home in Sundance in the Utah mountains - a place he loved, surrounded by those he loved - said publicist Cindi Berger in a statement.
The cause of Redford's death was not stated.
After becoming famous in the sixties, Redford was one of the biggest stars of the seventies in films such as "The Candidate", "All the President's Men" and "The Way We Were".
Among the fellow actors he collaborated with were Jane Fonda, Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise.
He received an Oscar for Best Director for the 1980 film "Ordinary People", which also won the award for Best Picture in 1980.
Film roles after the 70s became more sporadic as Redford focused on directing and producing, and on his new role in the independent film movement of the 1980s and 90s through his Sundance Institute.
In 2018, he appeared in what he called his farewell film, "The Old Man & the Gun".
- I just think I've had a long career that I'm very happy with. It's been so long since I was 21.
I think now, as I'm entering my eighties, it's perhaps time to move towards retirement and spend more time with my wife and family - Redford told AP shortly before the film was released.
