Statistics Office Data: Federation Produced Less Electricity Than in 2023, Electricity Exports in Significant Decline

Decline in electricity production. Decline in electricity exports. Decline in lignite production. Decline in coke production. Decline in coal exports. Increase in electricity imports. Increase in coal imports.

These are, in short, the data from the Federal Office of Statistics pertaining to the energy sector in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Statisticians compared the first eight months of last year, 2023, with the first eight months of this year, 2024. Here are the indicators and comparisons.

During the first 8 months of 2024, 757 GWh were imported into the FBIH. During the first 8 months of 2023, 531 GWh were imported into the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. During the first 8 months of 2021, 543 GWh were imported into the FBIH, and in 2022, 264 GWh of electricity were imported into the FBIH. Thus, over the last four years, the Federation imported the most electricity in this year, 2024.

During the first 8 months of 2024, 870 GWh were exported from the FBIH. In the same period of 2023, 1,352 GWh were exported from the FBIH. During the first 8 months of 2021, 2,428 GWh were exported from the FBIH, and in 2022, 1,102 GWh were exported from the FBIH. Comparing the last four years, the worst results regarding electricity exports were achieved this year, 2024.

When we look at 2024 and electricity imports and compare them to 2022, imports have tripled.

When we look at 2024 and electricity exports and compare them to 2021, exports have fallen threefold.

At the same time, comparing the first eight months of 2023 to the first eight months of 2024, imports increased by 40%, while the decline in exports amounts to over 60%.

Now we will compare electricity production for the first eight months of 2021 and the first eight months of 2024. In the FBIH, during the first eight months of 2021, a total of 6,211 GWh was produced.

In the FBIH, during the first eight months of 2024, a total of 5,552 GWh was produced. This is an 11% decline in electricity production. At the same time, in 2023, a total of 5,083 GWh was produced, which is a 10% decline in production compared to the previous year.

When we look at this data, especially regarding electricity imports/exports, we get an explanation for why the price of electricity has increased and understand that with these indicators, we can expect further price rises.
