Armed conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, all border crossings between the countries closed

(Patria) - Armed conflicts broke out between Thailand and Cambodia early this morning, the armies of both countries reported, each claiming the other side fired the first shots.

The Thai army stated in its announcement that the armed forces of neighboring Cambodia opened fire on the disputed border area near the Ta Moan Thom temple, about 360 kilometers from the capital Bangkok.

The Thai embassy in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh urged its citizens to leave the country "as soon as possible" due to intensifying border conflicts, warning that the conflict could "continue and expand further," CNN reported.

"Thai citizens currently residing in Cambodia without a necessary reason to stay are advised to leave the country as soon as they can do so safely," the Facebook post stated.

The embassy also advises avoiding all unnecessary travel to Cambodia.

A warning was also issued to British citizens who should "exercise particular caution" and "adhere to the instructions of the local authorities" when traveling in the border areas between Thailand and Cambodia, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Commonwealth and Development.

Meanwhile, China has also urged its citizens in Cambodia to avoid the border area.

Thailand has closed its land border with Cambodia due to escalating tensions.
