(Patria) - Since the beginning of the leptospirosis epidemic, 83 cases have been reported in Sarajevo Canton, 35 have been laboratory confirmed, and based on the World Health Organization's definition, 48 are cases.
Two patients are hospitalized, while the Institute of Public Health of Sarajevo Canton states that there have been no deaths.
From June 9 to 11, 12 cases were reported.
The largest number of infected individuals are between the ages of 35 and 65, with 64 cases, and a higher proportion of affected individuals are men.
The leptospirosis epidemic was declared on May 23, and since then, anti-epidemic measures and mandatory spring deratization have been implemented.
The Sarajevo Canton Prosecutor's Office opened a case after the epidemic was declared, and several orders for action were issued to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Sarajevo Canton.
The Institute of Public Health of Sarajevo Canton determined that the legally mandated deratization was not carried out during 2023, nor in the spring of 2024, which caused the appearance of rodents whose urine spreads the bacteria that causes leptospirosis.
