A skyscraper in the center of Manchester appears very elegant, but has a big flaw

(Patria) - Beetham Tower, also known as the Hilton Tower in Manchester, boasts elegant, contemporary lines and a brilliant design, but it also has a big flaw - it's loud.

An approaching train, a landing spaceship, howling, or the sound of blowing into a giant bottle are just some of the comparisons Britons use to describe the sound of the country's loudest skyscraper when the wind blows.

The unusual sound prevents residents from sleeping during strong storms and gales. Beetham Tower in the center of Manchester produces a solid 78 decibels of noise, which is quite loud, writes Punkufer.

"80 decibels is equivalent to the noise of a city street, which can damage your hearing if you are exposed to it for a long time (more than 8-10 hours a day). It is the sound of a telephone ringing, a hairdryer, as well as a loud alarm," explains Decibelpro.

The main culprit for the sound emitted by Beetham Tower is the ornamental glass panels and the metal structure at the top of the building.

When wind passes over the edges of the glass panels, turbulence is created, which is amplified by resonance and produces a creepy howling sound that engineers cannot find a solution for.

You can produce a similar sound yourself by blowing into an empty glass bottle.

Removing the glass and installing foam pads and aluminum tubes on the roof of the tower did not help - the sound intensifies with the wind speed, and residents can hear it from a distance of almost 300 meters.

Beetham Tower has 47 floors and was built in 2006. At that time, with its height of 169 meters, it was declared the first true British skyscraper outside of London.

In addition to being tall, the skyscraper is also extremely slender and represents one of the thinnest buildings in the world, considering the ratio of height to width.
