(Patria) - An event that has been attracting millions of viewers worldwide for years has begun in Sweden - a 24-hour broadcast of the moose migration.
This slow TV phenomenon offers a relaxing view of nature, and the broadcast of the moose migration through Swedish forests and rivers has won the hearts of viewers, especially on the streaming platform SVT Play.
Every year, cameras placed along the Ångerman River capture moose heading in search of summer pastures.
This show, called "Den stora älgvandringen" in Swedish, or "The Great Moose Migration," began in 2019 with nearly a million viewers.
In 2024, the number of viewers on SVT Play has grown to an incredible nine million.
But what is so special about this broadcast? Viewers say the beauty is in what happens – nothing. Nothing happens for hours, everything is calm, until a moose appears.
- There is nothing spectacular, but something very beautiful is happening - Annette Hill, a professor of media and communication at Sweden's Jönköping University, tells Euronews.
For many, watching the moose migration has become a ritual that helps them slow down and connect with nature.
Ulla Malmgren (62), one of the passionate viewers, admits she has completely eliminated sleep from her daily routine while this is happening - "forget about it, I don't sleep".
However, the slow TV phenomenon does not only attract viewers. The TV crew following the moose migration also admits that it reduces their stress.
- Everyone working on this project feels a reduction in stress - says SVT project manager Johan Erhag.
Even the crew setting up cameras on locations or using drones feels the calming effect of nature.
Although moose are fascinating creatures, they are not always easy to spot. According to Erhag, the average Swede may only see them a few times in their life.
- We don't actually see them often. We usually see them when we're driving, maybe once or twice in a lifetime - Erhag points out.
This seems to be one of the reasons why The Great Moose Migration has so many fans.
The broadcast lasts until May 4th, and the cameras will be filming the daily migration of moose towards their summer pastures.
