Sarajevo International Airport celebrates 55 years with a week of activities '55 Summers of Sarajevo Flight'

(Patria) - Sarajevo International Airport proudly announces a week of activities marking its 55th anniversary. From July 1 to July 5, 2024, the airport will host a series of events, with symbolic gifts awaiting passengers.

Under the slogan "55 Summers of Sarajevo Flight," this celebration highlights the rich history of the airport as a key hub for travel and connecting people, cultures, and businesses. Over the past 55 years, Sarajevo International Airport, with the support of the Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the relevant ministry, the Supervisory Board, and other governing bodies, as well as indispensable support services: Border Police of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Air Traffic Control (BHANSA), BHDCA, Professional Fire Brigade, Emergency Medical Services, Indirect Taxation Authority – airport customs office, airlines, and our partners, has continuously provided excellent service to its users and contributed to the development of air traffic in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The week of activities will include a diverse program, during which we will have the opportunity to see live performances by Faruk Jahić Aki (Drumjay), who blends philharmonic and DJ-ing, and Mirza Sijerčić, a young man who brings blues and jazz back to Sarajevo with the magic of the saxophone.

Let us recall that air passenger traffic in this region began even before World War II. In 1930, the Belgrade - Sarajevo - Podgorica route was opened. The outbreak of World War II caused the suspension of all civil aviation activities. After the war, regular civil air traffic to Sarajevo was re-established, and from 1947, operations were carried out by the company JUSTA, later known as JAT.

With the construction of the new Sarajevo airport, located in Sarajevo Field, a new era in the development of civil aviation began. The Sarajevo-Ilidža Airport, as it was officially called at the time, was ceremonially opened on June 2, 1969. From then until today, the airport has become an important hub for air traffic, providing excellent service to passengers and contributing to the development of air traffic in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Today, with about 700 employees and traffic exceeding one million passengers annually, with approximately 15,000 flight operations per year, Sarajevo International Airport is a significant airport in the region. This week of activities and the anniversary celebration is an opportunity to remember our beginnings, but also to celebrate together our achievements and future plans.

Sarajevo International Airport invites all passengers to join this special event and celebrate together 55 years of flight, connection, and memories.

"With great pride, we mark 55 years of Sarajevo International Airport. Thank you to all employees and support services for your immense effort, dedication, and professionalism shown throughout all these years. Together, we have created a successful and recognizable airport, and we look optimistically toward the future. May many more summers of Sarajevo flight await us," said Alan Bajić, Director of Sarajevo International Airport.
