(Patria) - Although some consider honey a food that contributes to longevity, it could be harmful if consumed in excessive amounts, reports Index.
Honey can protect the body from inflammation, reduce the risk of developing cancer, atherosclerosis, and diabetes.
However, doctors from the American Heart Association advise healthy individuals not to consume more than half a tablespoon of honey per day. One tablespoon of honey has 64 calories and about 17 grams of sugar.
Namely, 80 percent of honey consists of sugars. Because of this, overindulgence in this food is linked to weight gain, diabetes, and tooth decay.
Honey should not be given to children under one year of age as it can seriously harm them and lead to dangerous side effects.
Honey is best absorbed by the body if consumed in the morning or at lunch. It should not be heated, meaning it is not recommended to put it in hot tea, as many do.
