(Patria) - The Egyptian pyramids are the only surviving wonder of the ancient world. Millions of people still visit them every year to enjoy their grandeur, but also to unravel the answer to the question of how they were built without modern tools.
Even after 4,500 years since their construction, they still defy the ravages of time. Experts claim that they once looked significantly different, reports Punkufer.
For starters, they were not sandy-brown in color, but distinctly white. All the pyramids were covered with fine white limestone that gleamed under the strong Egyptian sun.
About six million tons of limestone were used in the construction of the Great Pyramid of Giza, according to the National Museum of Scotland, which has one of the original limestone blocks on display.
Over time, the stones were stolen or repurposed for other construction projects.
Some records suggest that their white limestone casing began to disappear during the reign of Pharaoh Tutankhamun, i.e., from 1336 to 1327 BC.
The tops of the pyramids were covered with electrum, a natural alloy of silver and gold produced by intentionally fusing the components, as well as religious carvings.
What did they really look like? The answer to that question is provided in the attached YouTube video by Manuel Bravo, who often speaks about astonishing architectural details around the world.
