The Easiest and Fastest Way from the Airport to the Center of Istanbul

(Patria) - A trip to Istanbul always carries a dose of excitement - the city on two continents offers a fascinating blend of cultures, history, and rhythm that few cities in the world can surpass.

However, before you dive into the bazaars, have your first Turkish coffee with a view of the Bosphorus, or set out to explore palaces and minarets, you should know that another task awaits you - getting from the airport to the city center.

Istanbul has two airports, both excellently organized, but given the size of the city and traffic congestion, that journey is not necessarily quick, writes Punkufer.

The new Istanbul Airport, located about 40 kilometers northwest of the city, is the main hub for Turkish Airlines and most international flights.

Its size and modernity will leave you breathless - from duty-free zones to restaurants and lounges, everything looks like you have stepped into an airport of the future.

And after you land and pick up your luggage, it is time for the next phase - how to get to the city?

The fastest way is the M11 metro line, which directly connects the airport to the city.

It is possible to transfer to other lines, such as the M7 at Kağıthane station, which allows further connections to Taksim, Şişli, and other central areas.

The metro is clean, reliable, and fast - but with large suitcases it can be challenging, especially during rush hour.

If, however, you do not feel like transferring, carrying suitcases down stairs, and navigating through subway corridors, there is Havaist - the official airport bus that goes to almost all major neighborhoods in the city.

The bus departs from the bus terminal on the ground floor of the airport building, regularly and in an organized manner.

Tickets can be paid by credit card directly on the bus or via the IstanbulKart, the city's public transport card which you can purchase at the airport.

A particularly useful option is that on their official website you can track in real-time where each bus is currently located, which significantly facilitates planning.

Havaist goes to Taksim, Beşiktaş, Sultanahmet, but also to more distant neighborhoods like Bakırköy, Avcılar, and Beylikdüzü.

If you do not mind paying more and want comfort, there is the option of a taxi. To Taksim you will pay around 25 to 30 euros (depending on the app, time of day, and traffic), and the ride lasts between 40 and 90 minutes.

The BiTaksi and Uber apps work perfectly in Istanbul because direct deals with taxi drivers often end up with you overpaying for your trip after falling for the "just for you my friend" - friendly discount.

If you are going to the European side of the city - for example to Büyükçekmece, Küçükçekmece, Başakşehir, or Beylikdüzü - Istanbul Airport is more practical and faster.

With Havaist or the metro, you will feel like you have options you control, although - truth be told - you need patience both for waiting and for the ride.

Sabiha Gökçen Airport is located on the Asian side of Istanbul, and although it seems farther from the city center itself, it is an excellent option if your goal is to explore Kadıköy, Üsküdar, Maltepe, Pendik, or other interesting neighborhoods with a view of the eastern Bosphorus.

Compact, somewhat simpler than the new airport, but equally efficient.

From SAW to the city you can use the M4 metro line, which goes to Ayrılık Çeşmesi station where you connect with the Marmaray line, the underground train that goes under the Bosphorus and takes you to the European side (it also stops at Sirkeci station).

The journey takes about an hour and a half, and the entire route is covered by the IstanbulKart, so it is important to get a card for using public transport immediately upon arrival (it will come in handy later during your stay).

For those who want simplicity without transfers, there is also Havabus, a bus line that runs from SAW to Taksim, via Kadıköy and Yenisahra.

It is not as modern as Havaist, but it is a solid option and popular among locals. Tickets are purchased from the driver or via the app.

For those taking a taxi, the price to Taksim ranges between 30 and 35 euros, and to Asian neighborhoods significantly less - often under 15 euros, especially if you share the ride.

Regardless of which side you come from - European or Asian - Istanbul is not a city where you get from the airport to the center in 15 minutes.

Traffic is heavy, distances are large, and time sometimes works against you. However, what works in your favor is the good organization of transport, countless options, and the energy of the city that hits you the moment you step off the plane.

If you want an adventure with a local touch - choose the metro and Marmaray. If comfort is important to you and you are not in a hurry - the Havaist or Havabus bus.

If, however, you want the fastest way from point A to point B - taxi apps are your ally. Everything works, everything functions - just arm yourself with patience and good planning.

And once you arrive, Istanbul is entirely yours...
