(Patria) - Simple summer sandals known as flip-flops have specific straps and reached their peak popularity in the 2000s. Now they are returning to the fashion scene as an indispensable accessory.
In the last few seasons, the fashion world has witnessed the return of past trends, and one that we have noticed among trendsetters is the resurgence of flip-flops. However, doctors recommend that we should not be too relaxed with this type of footwear.
Flip-flops have become synonymous with summer footwear due to their simplicity, practicality, and breathability. Their characteristic design with plastic straps and a rubber sole provides comfort and facilitates movement, making them an ideal choice for relaxed summer days. However, today's fashion trends go a step further, and flip-flops are now worn on various occasions, whether formal or informal.
Celebrities in Cannes walked in flip-flops
Namely, last year in Cannes, celebrities decided to forgo their heels on the red carpet in favor of flip-flops. One of them was Jennifer Lawrence, who paired a lavish red Dior dress with black flip-flops.
Fashion experts and designers have recognized the potential of flip-flops as a style accessory and have started combining them with various clothing items. Now you can see flip-flops worn with flowing summer dresses, jeans, skirts, shorts, and even elegant evening gowns. This contrast between casual and elegant elements makes flip-flops an extremely interesting fashion detail that attracts attention.
Doctors listed dangerous consequences of wearing flip-flops
Doctors warn that flip-flops are not the best choice for the health of our feet.
Dr. Paul Macaulay, better known as @paulthepodiatrist on TikTok, warns people not to wear flat flip-flops.
“We have a big problem here in Asia because everyone is constantly wearing flip-flops. Unfortunately, some people are not ready for that,” he said.
Flip-flops are at the top of his list of worst footwear.
“Biomechanical imbalance leads to overuse injuries such as plantar fasciitis and posterior tibial tendonitis,” he added.
He emphasizes that flip-flops lack support and security for the foot.
“Some people who wear flip-flops for years may experience toe stiffness,” he warned, then showed a photo of a foot with curled toes.
“Wearing shoes with an additional strap around the heel can help. People with poor mobility are at risk of tripping and falling if they wear loose shoes like flip-flops, and diabetics should also be cautious. When they wear flip-flops, they can get injured, which can lead to a bigger problem such as an infected wound that can lead to amputation if not properly treated,” he noted, as reported by N1.
In the end, as he says, flip-flops are fine if worn on the beach or used for walking on the beach, but “it is not at all advisable to walk 5,000 to 10,000 steps a day in them,” writes Citymagazine.rs.
