Exhibition of Stolac dry stone walls

The Centre for Student Programmes and the Centre for Cultural Heritage of the International Forum of Bosnia will organize an exhibition of photographs of Stolac dry stone walls from October 15 to 31, 2014, reports the BH news agency Patria.

Participants of the Ninth International Summer School “Youth and Heritage” made, as part of the “Vernacular Architecture” workshop, surveys of available Stolac dry stone walls with the aim of their research and presentation. Thus, several hundred photographs of the most interesting Stolac dry stone walls were taken. Thirty-three photographs were selected for this exhibition.

A dry stone wall is a vernacular structure made of available natural stones. The collection and arrangement of stones from lower to higher parts of the wall involves stacking skill, which ensures the stability of the structure. These dry stone walls were used to fence properties, gardens, pastures, and the like. There are freestanding, retaining, and paved dry stone walls. They were also used in the construction of stables, sheepfolds, wells, riverbeds, and the like.

The photographs in this exhibition show typical forms of dry stone walls in the Stolac region. The selection of photographs was made by Tarik Čengić, Derviš Hadžimuhamedović, Halid Lepan, Krsto Mijanović, Evin Omari, and Martin Silič. The workshop was led by Krsto Mijanović.

The exhibition will be opened on October 15, 2014, at 11:00 AM in the meeting hall at the headquarters of the International Forum of Bosnia (Sime Milutinovića 10/III).
