New Hampshire Elections Part of Republican Showdown with Trump

By Armin Sijamić

Voters in the American state of New Hampshire went to the polls yesterday for the Republican presidential candidate. As soon as the polling stations closed, it was clear that this would be a different election in many ways, as American media reported that half of the voters in the Republican primaries do not belong to that party.

The United States is in an election year, and according to current estimates, the November elections should be a repeat of the battle from four years ago when Donald Trump and Joseph Biden crossed gloves. Biden won that race, and Trump insists the election was stolen. His supporters even stormed the Capitol and tried to prevent Biden from taking office as US President. Because of this, and other indictments, Trump is on trial and could end up in prison.

While the trials are ongoing, Trump is not giving up on his intention to enter the White House once again. Some polls show he is more popular than Biden, despite all the accusations and scandals associated with him.

Republicans have been in the process of choosing their candidate in recent months, and Trump, as the main factor, did not participate in debates with his colleagues. He claimed it was pointless, as some of his rivals had no popularity at all. Sometimes, where they would hold a debate, he would hold his rally on the other side of town and attract more people.

As time went on, it became clear that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former Trump Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley stood as the main competitors. DeSantis recently withdrew from the race and endorsed Trump, while Haley remained the only hope for a part of the Republican establishment and Biden's Democrats to avoid a repeat of the last election.
Republicans Against Trump

The fact that a part of the party to which he nominally belongs did not approve of the former president is also indicated by the existence for years of the group "Republicans Against Trump," who believe he is compromised in multiple ways and cannot represent this party as such.

But even outside this group, there are those who resist Trump's candidacy in other ways, and one of them is Nikki Haley, whom a part of the American public sees as belonging to the establishment connected with arms manufacturers and a representative of values cherished by Democrats, meaning she is liberal compared to the conservative views cherished by Republicans.

Haley entered the showdown with Trump a few weeks ago with claims that the former president and her former boss is no longer ready for the White House due to his nearly eighty years of age and that he is similar to Biden in that regard. She repeated this stance a few days ago, saying that "when you're eighty years old, you're not as sharp as you used to be," and shortly before that, she stated that she would not be his vice president under any circumstances, but that she wants to lead the world's greatest power.

Haley as an Alternative

The race being narrowed down to two names had been foreshadowed for months as Haley met with numerous wealthy donors and often targeted Trump, who was not present, at Republican debates. With such performances, she also gained media attention from media outlets that support Democrats.

Moreover, some believe that Haley will also be supported by liberal donors, who probably wouldn't back conservatives. This would give Haley an advantage over Trump, and she would automatically become the Republican candidate if he were to end up in prison, or if he were prevented from running in the elections, which is currently the case in the states of Maine and Colorado.

That idea could not be tested in the state of Iowa, because Trump achieved a historically high victory there in the Republican primaries, but it was tested in New Hampshire in recent days, where it was known that there were about forty percent of undecided voters and that it was a terrain where Nikki Haley's campaign could achieve a good result, although in the overall count, this small state does not play an important role when Republican votes are counted. However, a good result in New Hampshire would be proof that Haley can compete with Trump.

Yesterday's elections showed that. Trump's victory, announced weeks in advance, was in doubt from the moment the media reported that numerous undecided voters and Democrats were voting for Haley. Conversations between the media and voters who gave interesting answers were shared on social networks. Some were bitter about Trump, some Democrats voted for Haley because they didn't like Biden, and some believed that a person with indictments has no place in politics. In total, about fifty percent of those who voted were not Republicans.

With door-to-door campaigning, media support, and the favor of part of the Republican establishment, Haley received about 46 percent of the votes, far more than anyone could have predicted just a few months ago. In that short period, Haley, born Nimarata Nikki Randhawa, did not perform any miracles, nor did her political knowledge increase. Simply put, voters were offered the story of a moderate politician from the right.

Before the current race, she was also known to some of the public for a phone call from a Russian comedian who introduced himself as the Prime Minister of Poland and asked her, as the US Ambassador to the UN, to fight against Russian influence on the fictional island of Binomo located off the coast of China, which she promised and said she understood that Moscow had its fingers there and was influencing elections. However, even as such, Haley is acceptable to a part of the American establishment as long as Trump is not, who also did not excel in his knowledge of international politics during his term.
Continuation of the Nomination Battle

The elections in New Hampshire were relatively successful for Nikki Haley and her team, so there is no doubt that she will continue to oppose Trump in various ways in the upcoming contests in other states.

At the same time, Haley will be under attack from Trump, as well as from a part of the Republicans. One of them is Senator Rand Paul, who even launched a website and project called "nevernikkihaley." His main argument against Haley is the accusation that she received millions of dollars from arms manufacturers and that she stated she advocates for the abolition of anonymous comments on the internet, meaning that registration with the relevant state authorities would be required for commenting.

Her victory in the Republican race would be good news for Biden, whose popularity has been shaken, or for the Democrats, even if the current president decides not to run for a new term, according to those who support Trump.

Nikki Haley thinks differently. After the New Hampshire elections, she said that Trump is "the only Republican" that Biden can defeat. She said that since Trump's arrival in the White House, Republicans have "lost almost all elections," listing presidential, House of Representatives, and Senate elections. She said she would defeat Biden, called for the mental health of all politicians over 75 to be tested, and stated that Trump is avoiding a debate with her.

The Republican race will continue. If it is long, it will likely damage whichever candidate ultimately wins. The next state to vote is South Carolina, where Haley comes from. Harsh words and accusations, fierce campaigns and attacks could lead to further divisions among Republicans. These divisions could be another important asset that Democrats could use in the fight for the White House. Biden, whose popularity is declining, welcomes any help.
