Italian Camogli named the most beautiful coastal city in the world

(Patria) - Camogli, located about thirty kilometres from Genoa in northwestern Italy, has taken first place on the list of the most beautiful coastal cities in the world.

According to Architectural Digest, it beat Cape Town, Rio de Janeiro and Hong Kong.

Located on the Ligurian Riviera, Camogli is a popular summer destination with average temperatures of 27°C.

It is known as a mecca for photographers because it is extremely picturesque with its pastel-coloured houses, and charming restaurants and shops add to its appeal.

It is also one of the best places in Liguria to watch the sunset, as the winding coast naturally slopes towards the horizon, creating beautiful scenes, reports Punkufer.

Besides summer, visitors also flock to Camogli in early May, when the Sagra del pesce, a festival dedicated to local fish products, is held.

The festival, which has been held for over 70 years, is known for its main attraction - a giant four-metre frying pan in which three tonnes of fresh fish are prepared in a single day.

If you decide to visit, you can also explore its rich maritime history, as the town was a fishing village and commercial centre for many years, with roots dating back to ancient times.

The name Camogli literally means "house of women" because men sailed and fished for centuries, while women remained in the town.

But that is not the only nickname it carries. At the end of the 19th century, the town's fleet numbered hundreds of ships, earning Camogli the nickname "town of a thousand white sails".

It is only a 20-minute train ride from Genoa, making it ideal for a day trip - should you decide to explore that part of Italy.
