Train Cemetery in Bolivia Resembles Scenes from a Post-Apocalyptic Film

(Patria) - On the outskirts of the Bolivian town of Uyuni, amidst a dry and almost desert-like landscape, lies an unusual place that looks like a scene from a post-apocalyptic film - a train cemetery, known as Cementerio de Trenes.

Rusted wagons and locomotives, remnants of Bolivia's former railway boom, are scattered across the desert, writes Punkufer.

Today, this place attracts travelers and photographers from all over the world and often serves as the first stop before heading to the spectacular Salar de Uyuni - the largest salt flat in the world, spanning over 10,000 square kilometers.

In the late 19th century, Uyuni was an important transport hub for railway lines in South America, mainly due to the development of the mining industry. However, its decline in the 1940s halted further development, and the trains, mostly imported from Great Britain, were left to rust on the outskirts of the town.

Instead of dismantling them and selling them as scrap metal, the local population simply left them to decay, at the mercy of the elements.

Over time, the harsh climate took its toll. Salt-laden winds from nearby salt pans corroded the metal, and today only rusty, skeletal structures remain, creating an almost surreal sight.

The easiest way to reach this unusual place is through organized tours to Salar de Uyuni. A visit usually lasts about an hour, which is enough for exploration and photography, as well as for listening to interesting stories from local guides.

The train cemetery is particularly attractive in the early morning hours, when the soft light further emphasizes the textures of the rusted metal.

Salar de Uyuni has two different faces, depending on the time of year, and both are interesting in their own way. During the dry season, from May to November, temperatures are lower and the ground hardens, allowing visitors to access areas that are inaccessible during the rainy season.

From June to August is the high tourist season, so excursions are a bit more expensive. The rainy season, from December to April, offers a special experience as it allows visitors to enjoy a breathtaking view.

The layer of water that accumulates then turns this flat, white surface into a heavenly mirror in which the sky is perfectly reflected, making it seem as if the sky and earth are merging at that very spot. It is a sight that many photographers, professional or amateur, want to capture.
